Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
This policy explains what information Wakoku (wakokujp.com) collects, why, and what you can do about it. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the site and our newsletter.
What we collect
We collect only what you give us or what's needed to operate the site:
- Email address — when you sign up for a free guide or our newsletter.
- Usage data — anonymised analytics such as pages visited, approximate region and device type, to understand what's useful.
- Cookies — small files used for analytics and, where shown, advertising (see below).
We do not ask for sensitive personal information, and we never sell your data.
How we use it
- To send the free guide you requested and, if you opted in, occasional Japanese tips and updates.
- To improve our tools and guides based on what readers actually use.
- To keep the site secure and working.
Email & the newsletter
Newsletter sign-ups are handled by our email provider (Brevo), which stores your email to deliver messages on our behalf. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time.
Cookies, analytics & advertising
We use privacy-respecting analytics to measure traffic. Some pages may display ads served by third-party advertising partners, which can set their own cookies to show relevant ads and measure performance. You can control or clear cookies in your browser settings; blocking them won't break the core tools.
Third parties
We share data only with the service providers that help us run Wakoku (for example our email and hosting providers, analytics and advertising partners). They process data on our instructions and under their own privacy terms. We don't sell or rent your personal information.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the EU/UK GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to withdraw consent for marketing emails. To exercise any of these, email us and we'll take care of it.
Data retention
We keep newsletter data until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Analytics data is retained in aggregated or anonymised form.
Children
Wakoku is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
We may update this policy as the site evolves. We'll revise the "last updated" date above when we do.
